  8. This is a weekly post designed to prevent anyone from asking any "stupid"
  9. questions.  This is not to be confused with Pat Gonzalez's X-Files FAQ,
  10. which is a very complete FAQ for the show itself.
  11.     This newsgroup is, for the most part, a rather friendly group and
  12. we'd like to keep it that way, so try not to flame.  In addition, for a
  13. full week after an episode has aired, be SURE to mark all posts containing
  14. spoiler information CLEARLY.

  16. Q:  Are the X-Files based on true stories?
  17. A:  No.  But elements of the stories have been taken from true-life
  18.     accounts.  The notice preceding the pilot episode was there for
  19.     effect.
  20.  
  21. Q:  Who is the mysterious man who Mulder gets information from?
  22. A:  "Deep Throat," (abbreviated DT) as he has been dubbed by the writers,
  23.     is a powerful figure in the government, for more info, see the Deep
  24.     Throat FAQ.  He is played by actor Jerry Hardin.

  26. Q:  Will Mulder and Scully ever become romantically or sexually involved?
  27. A:  The show's creator and executive producer, Chris Carter has stated that
  28.     he has no plans for this to happen and anticipates none in the future.

  30. Q:  When will the second season begin?
  31. A:  The season premiere, entitled "Little Green Men" is scheduled for
  32.     September 16.  There is no need to worry about pre-emptions.

  34. Q:  Is there any sort of X-Files merchandise?
  35. A:  There are several official products available.  These include a
  36.     sweatshirt, t-shirt, baseball cap, coffee mug, keychain, and letterman
  37.     jacket.  All of these can be ordered through Delphi. Many of them can
  38.     also be found in Sam Goody/Musicland or Suncoast Pictures stores.  An
  39.     X-Files comic is due to begin in January.  The first X-Files novel
  40.     by Charles Grant will be available in November.

  42. Q:  If Star Trek fans are Trekkies, then what are X-Files fans?
  43. A:  Chris Carter would call us "File-o-philes."  In a newsgroup poll, fans
  44.     preferred to be called "X-Philes," a name which seems to have become
  45.     official in the eyes of TV Guide, Starlog, etc.

  47. Q:  I wrote/have an idea for an episode, what should I do with it?
  48. A:  One of two things.
  49.       1) Post it to alt.tv.x-files.creative (if your site carries it) and/or
  50.      upload it to the Rutgers ftp site.  It is preferable that you do
  51.      not post fan-fiction to this newsgroup, but if you must, then
  52.      please CLEARLY label it as FAN-FICTION in the subject header.
  53.       2) Nothing, Chris Carter & co. are not interested and do not accept
  54.          scripts from writers without agents.

  56. Q:  What else has David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson/Jerry Hardin appeared in?
  57. A:  See the X-Files FAQ for DD and GA, it's fairly complete so odds are that
  58.     if you saw them in something which isn't new, it's old news.  One thing
  59.     which isn't mentioned in the FAQ is Duchovny's AT&T commercial spot.
  60.     Jerry Hardin has appeared in *MANY* movies and TV shows, so please
  61.     don't cry out every time you spot him.

  63. Q1: What is the marital status of David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson?
  64. Q2: Is it my imagination or is Gillian Anderson gaining weight?
  65. A:  David Duchovny is still single, but is apparently dating someone.
  66.     Gillian Anderson was married during the filming of the first season
  67.     and is currently pregnant (hence the weight gain).  She is due in
  68.     September.

  70. Q:  I read that they are considering writing Gillian's pregnancy into the
  71.     show, is this true?
  72. A:  No, Scully will appear this season, but will be missing several
  73.     episodes.  The rumours that she will be impregnated by an alien are
  74.     false.

  90. A:  They are given by the writers and appear in the Episode Guide as they
  91.     do on the scripts and in some local television listings.  Check your
  92.     local paper to see if they list them.

  95. A:  All four of these documents are posted on the first of each month to
  96.     the newsgroup.  Alternatively, you can download a copy via ftp from the

  112. Q:  What is IRC and when is the X-Files channel open?
  113. A:  IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and is sort of a party line for
  114.     computer users.  The #x-files channel is run on Fridays at 10PM,
  115.     Saturdays at 8 PM, and Mondays at noon (all by Eastern US time).

  130. C&C--Confused and Cute--refers to Mulder's condition when he looks
  131.  as though he just woke up and has that look on his face that says,
  132.  "Huh?"
  133.  
  134. Capitalizing the first letter of a word--such as: Skeptic, Believe,
  135.  Trust, Partner--implies a special significance to that word as
  136.  related to THE X-FILES (i.e. "Skeptic" usually refers to Scully,
  137.  though it can refer to someone else, "Believe" refers to a belief
  138.  in the "Extreme Possibility" or paranormal, yatta, yatta, yatta.)

  140. CITC--Conversation In The Car--refers to the exchange between
  141.  Mulder and Scully in his car as they kept surveillance on Eugene
  142.  Tooms in "Tooms."  This is the conversation in which Scully cements
  143.  their Partnership, telling Mulder, "I wouldn't put myself on the
  144.  line for anybody but you."  Shortly thereafter she *does* put
  145.  herself on the line, by lying to Skinner about Mulder's whereabouts
  146.  when Eugene Tooms was supposedly assaulted, saying that she was
  147.  with Mulder being "orientated" on the unauthorized surveillance.

  149. CITDBTB--Conversation In The Dark By The Bed--this refers to the
  150.  scene in the pilot episode, "The X-Files," in which Mulder tells
  151.  Scully why he is so obsessed with abductions: he believes his
  152.  sister, who disappeared when he was a kid and has never been heard
  153.  from since, was abducted.

  155. CSM--Cigarette Smoking Man--refers to the mysterious man in
  156.  Skinner's office in "Tooms."
  157.  
  158. DDEB and GATB--David Duchovny Estrogen Brigade and the
  159.  corresponding Gillian Anderson Testosterone Brigade--DDEB started
  160.  as an email chat group on the Internet consisting of women who lust
  161.  after Duchovny, and GATB naturally sprung up as the obvious
  162.  counterpart for the guys.  There are currently separate branches of
  163.  the DDEB on different networks which may be reforming under one or
  164.  more new names.

  167.     discriminate based on gender.]

  169. E.B.E.--Extraterrestrial Biological Entity.  First used on THE X-FILES
  170.  by Mulder in "E.B.E."

  172. EIHPs--Enemies In High Places (singular: EIHP*)--refers to the off-
  173.  screen presence of people Higher Up in the D.C.  Establishment who
  174.  can hinder and manipulate Mulder and Scully.  Also used, by
  175.  extension, in reference to those who hinder or manipulate other
  176.  players.  First used by Gayle, Karin, and Laura Anne.

  178. EP--Extreme Possibility.  First used by Kwicker.
  179.  
  180. FIHPs--Friends In High Places (singular: FIHP*)--refers to the off-
  181.  screen presence of Mulder's contacts Higher Up in the D.C.
  182.  Establishment who can protect Mulder and Scully.  Also used, by
  183.  extension, in reference to those helping or protecting other
  184.  players.  First used by Gayle, Karin, and Laura Anne.

  186. IMBS--Infamous Mosquito Bite Scene--refers to the scene in the
  187.  pilot episode, just before CITDBTB, in which Scully discovers marks
  188.  on her lower back that look suspiciously like those found on people
  189.  who Mulder believes have been abducted and controlled by E.B.E.s
  190.  (Extraterrestrial Biological Entities).  She runs next door to his
  191.  motel room in her bathrobe, and in a panic, strips to her underwear
  192.  and asks Mulder to examine the marks, which turn out to be mosquito
  193.  bites, to her great relief.

  195. IWTCHU--(The) I Want To Cuddle Him Urge--refers to the sentiment
  196.  evoked in many women every time Mulder gets beaten up.  Coined by
  197.  Kathy.

  199. MIB--Man In Black (plural: MIBs*)--Super-secret government agents.
  200.  All that is known is that they are effective in hushing up Things
  201.  The Government >>Really<< Doesn't Want You To Know.  By any means
  202.  necessary.

  204. RSD--Red Shoe Diaries--Duchovny's series on Showtime, also
  205.  available on video at Blockbuster.  (Blockbuster Volumes #1 and #4
  206.  are the most often referred to.)
  207.  
  208. SRE--Scully Rational Explanation--Any of the various explanations
  209.  that Scully comes up with that are so far-fetched they almost make
  210.  Mulder's explanations seem more credible, such as "a mountain
  211.  lion," and (my personal favorite), "swamp gas" (both from
  212.  "E.B.E.").  First used by yours truly, SUe.  An SRE list is
  213.  currently being compiled.

  215. UST--Unresolved Sexual Tension.  First used by LAG.
  216.  
  217. V&C--Vulnerable and Cute--refers to Mulder's condition most of the
  218.  time.
  219.  
  220. WPDF--Wounded Puppy Dog Face--refers to the rather sad look Mulder
  221.  often has on his face, somewhat reminiscent of a puppy that's been
  222.  hit with a rolled-up newspaper.
  223.  
  224. Yatta yatta yatta--1. Phrase used by Duchovny in his AT&T
  225.  commercial, meaning "etc.," or "and so forth."  2. When used in
  226.  conjunction with a wink ;-), is the 90's equivalent of "hubba hubba
  227.  hubba."
  228.  
  229. YAXA--Yet Another X-FILES Acronym (plural: YAXAs*)--1.  What we'll
  230.  have if we add something else to this list.  2.  Exclamation used
  231.  upon the discovery of what might be Yet Another X-FILES Acronym,
  232.  much like you would say "Bingo!"

  236. *Note: Certain YAXAs, such as MIB and YAXA, are pluralized by
  237.  adding an "s" to the end; others, such as EIHPs and FIHPs are
  238.  generally used in the plural form, but are sometimes used in the
  239.  singular (FIHP, EIHP).  Yes, I realize that these are not
  240.  grammatically correct, and that when speaking you wouldn't say "Man
  241.  In Blacks," but this is the way they're written online.  Hey,
  242.  language is weird, what can I say? :-)
